Dream come true for Tom as he starts his own business after nearly 10 years in the industry
Insurance expert Tom Baker saw his dream come true after starting his own business.
The 27-year-old, who lives in Stone, Staffordshire, says he always wanted to start his own business after attending a ‘career academy’ program at the school.
Today, after spending almost 10 years in the insurance industry, he launched Instinct Insurance and Risk Management Services.

Tom said: “I always wanted to own my own business. At school I took a career academy course where local businesses give kids the chance to learn more about business, about their functioning and on professional life.
“One of the benefits of the program was that during summer vacation you could spend seven weeks working in a paid internship.
“I spent seven weeks at a local accounting firm and was finally offered an apprenticeship after I graduated – and later I was contacted for an internship position with Aynsley Insurance Brokers.
“To be honest, I had never even heard of an insurance brokerage. I had never met one, but I went to review it and ended up spending three years there.
“I started out as an intern in insurance of persons, but I wanted to switch to commercial insurance and unfortunately there were no opportunities, so I looked elsewhere.”
Tom eventually landed a job with Manchester-based TEn Insurance Services Ltd, where he became a team leader responsible for six employees.
But after being forced to work from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, he decided it was a good time to go it alone.

Tom said: “I had always thought about starting my own business, but one of my concerns was whether I could actually operate from home, so when the lockdown hit I realized I could, and it gave me the motivation to do it. “
Instinct Insurance is an independent insurance brokerage firm whose services include commercial insurance, high net worth insurance, personal insurance and risk management for clients across the UK.

Tom said: “I think the pandemic has shown people that it helps to have an insurance broker, so there is definitely still a market there.
“But I’m not here to try to win every deal, for me it’s about providing personalized service. My clients are sure to have someone who fights, someone who is truly passionate about it. industry and someone who will look after them. “
He added: “I am working from home at the moment, but in the future I would like to have a branch on the main street and employ local people.
“The big dream is to make Instinct a brand, maybe expand my services with an accounting, HR and legal branch, but in the short term I just want to grow my business locally.”
