Jaguars performed due diligence before focusing on Trevor Lawrence
The Jacksonville Jaguars had no trouble accepting all the talk about taking quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick. It’s one of the worst-kept secrets in the NFL and head coach Urban Meyer and assistant head coach Charlie Strong have hinted that the team will stand out from Clemson with the best selection. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media recently explained how the Jags reached a consensus.
Rapoport says that while the Jaguars will likely draft Lawrence No. 1, they’ve done their due diligence in the 2021 quarterback class, bringing their coaching staff together in late January. In addition, Meyer told the NFL insider that the team’s brass have held virtual meetings with top quarterback prospects Lawerence, Justin Fields and Zach Wilson.
Meyer said all of them had “very high marks,” but added that Lawrence stood out and liked the way he treated his new celebrity status. He also compared the Tennessee native to brothers Joey and Nick Bosa, whom he trained in college. Additionally, the former Florida and Ohio state head coach believes the three are hard workers, selfless and caring.
The Bosa brothers have successful careers in the NFL, and despite their injuries, they are two of the best defensemen in the league. The fact that Lawrence possesses the same character traits as them should prompt the Jaguars to use the first pick in the draft against him.
The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t done anything extraordinary.
Scouting Services spent a lot of time watching tapes, hosting virtual meetings, and interviewing prospect coaches and teammates. The Jaguars’ approach to Lawrence was no different. They researched him and other top quarterback prospects, Wilson and Fields.
On the other hand, it was refreshing to hear Meyer share his take on the process. There was always a chance that Lawrence would be the Jaguars’ first choice, but the brass of the team had to make sure he was the right choice. Wilson and Fields are both talented players so if they choose Lawrence it’s because they think he stands out and will become a better pro.
The project is less than 48 hours away. Knowing who will be the choice of the Jaguars does not make it any less exciting. They were looking for a potential quarterback and they are on the verge of having him.
