SNP-loyal comedians like Janey Godley leave Scotland without real satire of those in power – Brian Wilson
Instead, she became a court favorite and, of course, a recipient of Scottish Government pledges.
This week’s revelation of her tweeting history suggested that one of the countless special advisers should have devoted some time to due diligence before Ms Godley was promoted to the vernacular voice of the nation.
Some of these tweets were so racist, obscene, and offensive, especially to people with disabilities, that family newspapers did not reprint them. When the storm broke, the content could not be released to ministers as the Scottish IT government dumped them.
Janey Godley: The hurtful tweets were “totally unacceptable”, according to Nicola Sturgeon …
One of its major drawbacks is the lack of satire in Scottish broadcasting. Can you imagine the answer if there was an equivalent to Have I Got News for You ?, inflicting the same brutal and indiscriminate treatment on Scottish politicians that was accepted (because they have no choice) by those in Westminster?
But what about Mrs. Godley? Her penance would have been more convincing if it had come before the tweets appeared rather than after. Sorry to be caught, rather that. As for them being “historic”, 2016 hardly corresponds to this description, for a person who had ample time to know himself better.
Here, however, is the test question. Would I prosecute her under the Humza Yousaf Hate Crimes Law? Of course not.
Let it simmer in its own ignominy – but that shows the judgments that will have to be made under this pernicious legislation.
