Students will be allowed to earn an additional €2,000 this summer, which will not affect their eligibility for a SUSI scholarship under plans to be announced by Minister Simon Harris today.

The Minister for Further and Higher Education is expected to seek government approval from his Cabinet colleagues to change the government scholarship scheme for postgraduate students.

Changes to the scholarship program will allow students to earn more during the summer holidays and ensure that students do not lose their scholarship eligibility.

This will allow the non-compliance with holiday income to increase from €4,500 to €6,552.

The move will also help businesses, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sector, deal with labor and skills shortages over the coming months.

Minister Harris is expected to make the announcement after Cabinet with Tanáiste Leo Varadkar.

These measures are part of a broader package of reforms to the scholarship system.

From September, all maintenance grants will increase by €200.

Income thresholds have been changed to ensure more students are eligible and the adjacency rate has also been changed, meaning more students will be eligible for a higher level of support.

As part of the Funding the Future policy, Minister Harris has also indicated his intention to make further changes to the program over a number of budgets.

Minister Harris will also present a memo to the government to help displaced Ukrainians access higher education.

Under this scheme, Ukrainian students will be treated as Irish students and will be able to access financial aid through the Erasmus programme.
