The government on Tuesday launched a call for candidates for the post of chairman of the CCI competition watchdog.

Current President Ashok Kumar Gupta’s term will end later this year.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) monitors anti-competitive practices in all market sectors and also strives to promote fair business practices.

According to a communication released by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, eligible candidates can apply for the position and the application must be submitted within four weeks.

Gupta, a former civil servant, was appointed president in November 2018, for a three-year term.

Candidates for the position of President must have ”such professional experience of at least fifteen years in international trade, economics, business, commerce, law, finance, accounting, management, industry , public affairs or competition matters, including competition law and policy, which the central government believes may be of benefit to the Commission,” according to the communication.

The president will receive a consolidated monthly salary and allowances of Rs 4.50 lakh but will not be entitled to a house and car. He or she may hold office for a term of five years from the date of entry into office or until age 65, whichever comes first.

In recent times, CCI has investigated various cases of alleged unfair business practices, particularly in the growing digital space.
