Walker County Agrees on JeffCo Tornado Disaster Loan
The U.S. Small Business Administration said Monday it had approved Walker County for loan aid as a contiguous county due to the Jan. 25-26 tornado that hit Jefferson County.
The April 1 move opens the door to federal disaster loans for businesses, private nonprofits, homeowners and tenants. Contiguous counties included Bibb, Blount, St. Clair, Shelby, Walker, and Tuscaloosa.
The June 1 deadline is set for filing a claim for property damage, while the deadline for economic damage is January 3, 2022. Among the loans available are business loans for physical disasters (including including private non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, and private universities), economic disaster loans and home loans (for homeowners and tenants to repair or replace real estate and personal property damaged by a disaster, including automobiles).
Governor Kay Ivey had requested a declaration of disaster in a March 30 letter.
The SBA is firmly committed to providing Alabama residents with the most effective, customer-focused response possible to assisting businesses of all sizes, homeowners and tenants with federal disaster loans, said SBA administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman in a statement Monday. Getting businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our top priority at SBA. ”
The SBA will open a Disaster Lending Awareness Center at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7 at the Fultondale Public Library to help businesses and residents affected by the disaster. Visitors are encouraged to wear a face mask. The center is located at 500 Byrd Lane in Fultondale and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on weekends.
